Title Sequences that have Influenced our Film Opening

The Stepfather has influenced our Structure of our Thriller Film Opening as the Mental Girl walks silently around the Asylum before anything is said or done. We got this idea from The Stepfather as he slowly walks around the house before exiting and we see dead bodies therefore we assume that he has done it. This also brings the 'Thriller Factor' to our opening scene as the audience will be wanting to know, How did she get there ? What Happened Previously ? just like we did whilst watching the Stepfather. We are hoping by doing this it will engage the audience whilst they are watching our Thriller Film Opening.

Asylum has had an influence on our Thriller Film Opening as we have chosen to do a Sub-Genre which is Thriler/Horror. The film Asylum will bring the 'Horror Factor' to our Film Opening. We have decided to base our Film Opening on this film as its about a girl who was in a Asylum therefore we want to portray that in our Film Opening. We decided to use this content as its a great mixture of Horror and Thriller which we always wanted to do as our Film Opening.

Story Board of Our Thriller Opening

This is our Story Board for our Thriller Film Opening.

All the shots that are taken here are the shots that we want to use when we start filming to get the full affect of the Thriller/Horror Sub-Genre.

We hope to get all the shots accurate and correct.

Prelim Analysis

Analysising Prelim Clip

In the process of making the prelim clip , we were not aware of the accuracy and precision of fliming but after looking at the clip , there were improvements to be made.
Our Camera Shots we sucessfully done to standard and the task was fully completed to our ablity.
We needed to improve on our clip to flow nicely with ever scene therefore our clip had many jumps.
We failed to use a reverse shot in the process of making our prelim clip.
Also our clip wasnt focused enough therefore the outcome of clip was blurry
Another problem that effected our clip was the interfering sound ,which didnt quite go with the clip. This problem could be solved with soundpro , this would allow us to dub over the interefing sound.
BUT
We have learned from our mistakes and will make sure our final project meets high standards and hopefully would come across as professional , well lets just see I suppose...!!

Advertisement Analysis of the Film: I Give It A Year

Today I was reading the Metro and I crossed past an advertisement for this film “I give it a year”. I could tell what the Genre of the film is by just looking at the advertisement so I figured, Why not Blog about it?

The Genre of the film looks like a Romantic Comedy. The big bright red font used illustrates this as it connotes love. The position of the actors and the red sofa (Mise en Scene) that is used brings out the Love Factor as both the man and woman sitting down have very close body language towards each other therefore it shows that they may be in some type of relationship together. The background is also clear white.  This brings out the bright red even more and allows it to stand out from the Newspaper.

This advertisement allows people to guess what type of story line this film is going to be based upon. I can sense jealously from the characters behind the man and the woman on the sofa as there body language is very distant from them and they are also looking down on them therefore they might think of themselves as slightly superior to them. By putting the two characters on the red Sofa in the middle of the advertisement also shows that they are the main characters in the film and the film revolves around them and their relationship.
This advertisement made it clear to me that as audience members we automatically can see the genre of the film by just viewing the advertisement shown.

Our Target Audience

As our Film will be a Horror/Thriller we would set the age rating as a 15 therefore the film will be aimed at people who are aged 15 and over.

We will also target both Men and Women as our audience. We feel that both can relate to the film as it is based around a young girl but it's a thriller and as shown through research, Men prefer Thriller films over women.

Our Ideas for our Thriller Film Opening.

1. We want it to be based in a type of Mental Asylum where a girl lives with other Mental People. This will be Sub - Genre as it will be a mixture of Thriller and Horror (a Horror Thriller).

Plot:

  • She wakes up and finds herself in a mental Asylum with her Teddy Bear.
  • She then opens the different doors trying to find her purpose, there she discovers other Mental People.
  • She then opens the last door and drops her Teddy Bear.
  • She then Cries Blood.

Roles:

Bradley - Filming.
Reanne - Acting as the main girl with her Teddy Bear.
Kavita - Another mental person in the institution.

2. We would like to use intertextuality where we take some scenes from the Stepfather (2009) and make it our own.

Plot:
  • He is leaving the house and decides to make himself a cup of coffee.
  • Whilst doing this he turns on the Radio like any other day.
  • We then discover two dead women in the house.
  • He then picks up his bag to leave.
  • He has a quick Flash-Back about the killing.
  • Then he finally leaves the house.
Roles:

Reanne - Filming/Dead Girl.
Bradley - Acting as the 'Stepfather'.
Kavita - Filming/Dead Girl.

Potential Location for Our Thriller Opening

This is various images from the same location that we would like to film in.

Analysis of prelim clip

I have learnt a lot from our prelim clip. Overall i dont think that our clip was to good we made a few basic mistakes, but me and the group have learnt from those mistakes.
First mistake i noticed was right at the beginning of our clip, the shot was blurry we needed to adjust the camera to  clearer shot. Our match cut of the hand was pretty good it went in well with the clip. After we had a change in camera shot from behind to front, the mistake we made there was that kavita was in the shot from behind at the door but she wasnt there in the shot from the front. The noise in the background was of students in our college since we filmed it in their, we couldnt edit that out without editing the dialogue of the characters.

When kavita and i sat down, the next shot was kavita standing up pouring a cup of drink. The two shots didnt go together, the shots were to jumpy. We also placed the chairs near the window wear there was too much light and the characters looked like shadows. The next match cut of the dropped cup didnt really fit in with the clip it wasnt timed to well. Also with the conversation between me and kav we could have got a reverse shot of the conversation and that also would have helped with the lighting situation. Finally there was another jump cut of kavita sitting down and then laying on the floor again didnt go to well in the clip.

Me and the group however learn  lot from this.

Analysis of a Student Thriller Opening

Analysis of a Student Thriller Opening - MORTIFER

CAMERA : There was a point in the video where there was a big close up on the watch this makes the audience aware that the watch is something significant but also shows how the watch may mean the character has an eye on the time as he/she may need to be with someone or do something at a particular time. When the killer came to kill the victim , a low angle shot was used to show the killer to be more powerful.

EDITING:  At the beginning of the thriller opening a cross cut is used , at the start there was a guy in sitting on a bench in a opened spaced park when it moved on to a guy roaming around  in a children's park .This suggests there is a connection between the two situations but it also creates suspense as the audience will question what the link could be between the two situations.
A reverse shot is used when the two characters were talking on the phone , this shows the emotions and facial expressions of both characters but also carries on as a normal day , it builds the suspense for the audience.

MISE EN SCENE: Throughout the opening the seems to be natural lighting hence the fact the location is outdoors , to be particular the locations are mainly in parks but there are contrasts in the park as one is   an empty , open spaced park this illustrates the maturity in the character , however on the other hand the scenery is a children's park therefore shows the character uses this place to relax and meet up wit friends as every teenager does but it also suggests this may not be a usual place to be surrounded by danger until....
The costume of the first character consists of a long black coat and scarf suggests something mysterious about the character  as if he has something to hide. The other two characters are casually dressed therefore means they believe its a normal day ahead
The prop used is the gun which is the main element and also relates to danger as this prop was used to kill.

SOUND: At the point where the girl answers her phone, diegetic sound is used this could be to create an element of reality and it also gives the audience the urge to tell the character something terrible is about to happen.
Towards the end sound effects were  used this is when the gun shoots the bullet and a type of explosion sound is  then used.

The 180 Degree Rule

The 180 Degree Rule

The Rule

  • The rule states that the camera should remain the same side of an imaginary line
  • The line is drawn perpendicular to the camera's viewpoint in the establishing shot of the scene
  • The rule enforces continuity of the film
An example - the car chase scene! This may get confusing but just imagine as this will help you understand it better! If the car is travelling from right to left, the next shot must be also shot from the same side , meaning the car has enter the frame from right to left. Got that....!

My Analysis of Our Prelim Clip

We where successfully able to do all the Camera Angles (Match Cuts, Low Angle Shots, Medium Shots, Close Ups) that we needed to so we could establish the content correctly and do the task correctly.
We need to work on getting the shots which we filmed to run smoothly so that no Jumps occur within our filming whereas in our Prelim Clip a few Jumps occur therefore the film comes across as quite inadequately done. We also didn't manage to use Reverse Shots. In the first 20 Seconds of our Prelim Clip the focus on the camera isn't clear therefore the film looks quite blurry and its not as clear as the other parts of the Prelim Clip. In the future we will always make sure that the camera is on a clear focus before we start filming so all the film comes out looking the same and in place. When our actors are speaking, it is interfired with background noise therefore its a struggle to hear them speak. When we where filming, there was other groups filming in the same area as us which made the noise that they where making interfire with our Prelim Clip. When we start to film our Thriller opening we will make sure that no background noise occurs in our piece.
By making our Prelim Clip i've learned errors that are very easy to make for example, Not focusing the Camera before filming, Therefore the small errors that we have made now make me weary for when we start filming our Thriller opening. These small errors will not be made. I've also learned how Sound can create a different feel to our Prelim Clip and also convey different emotions for the audience to feel. I've learned that when we are filming, we need to make the Clips more precise so that they fit well with each other to avoid any jumps. I didn't realise that the Jumps can make a Film look very ammature until we watched our Prelim Clip through fully on Final Cut Pro.
When we next film we will choose a better area to film to avoid any unneccassary background noise which interfiers with our piece. We will also make sure that all the cuts in our piece run smoothly to avoid any messy jump cuts. We will use more props to make our filming look more realistic. We will film in a better location so that the audience get more of a feel about the Mise en Scene and can relate it to the content of the film and what we are trying to portray.
Overall i really enjoyed filming our Prelim Clip and will definantly want to film again. I am proud to be able to be a part of it.

Screen Shots of How We Produced Our Prelim Clip

We added text to our Prelim Clip to show the audience who took part. This also fits in to a traditional film opening where the Director is shown last on the screen so its who the audience remember last in the opening credits.

We exported our clip to Soundtrack Pro when we finished adding Text. This allowed us to add sound to our Prelim clip which makes it more effective for the audience and fits in with our clip. This conveys more emotion that the audience will feel towards the character.

Foley Sound

Foley sound is the reproduction of everyday sound effects which are added in a film to make the sound much better and link in well with the film. Footsteps are one of the well known foley sounds used. Jack Donavon Foley was the creator of foley sound in 1927. Foley sounds help create realism and audiences never realise that the sound effect was added they think it is all natural, without foley sounds films can be less entertaining and the noises would feel un natural.

Our Prelim Clip

180 degree roll

The 180 degree allows an audience to visually connect with unseen movement. The 180 degree rule insists that everything is shot from right to left. If the camera was to film from left to right the audience would miss some action and be very confused. A change in the rule would change key things in films and sporting activities like an eye line match. This rule must not be broken.

Foley Sound

I learnt that Foley Sound effects are sound effects that synchronize on screen and require the expertise of a Foley Artist to record properly. Footsteps, the movement of hand props (e.g. a paper and pen, a cup of coffee) and the rustling of cloth are common in Foley Units. Foley is another method of adding sound effects. Foley is more of a technique for creating sound effects than a type of sound effect. It is often used for creating the real world sounds that are very specific to what is going on onscreen. With this technique the action onscreen is essentially recreated to try to match it as closely as possible. If it is done correctly, it is very hard for audiences to tell what sounds were added and what sounds were originally recorded. In the early days of film and radio, Foley artists would add sounds in realtime or pre-recorded sound effects would be played back from analogue discs in realtime. Today, with effects held in digital format, it is easy to create any required sequence to be played in any timeline.

The 180 Degree Rule

The 180 degree rule is a basic guideline in film making that states that two characters (or other elements) in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line.  The new shot is called the reverse angle.

When I filmed my Preliminary Exercise I included the 180 degree rule. I included a wide range of camera shots and movements which showed the relationship between two characters.

My Final Project

Title Sequence Editing Clip With Sound.

This is my Final Project. I added Sound to it using Sound Track Pro. It's a lovely Sound of a light piano being played which creates a sympathetic atmosphere throughout the opening scene. This allowed the full effect of the film opening to take place for the audience to view.

Our Storyboard

We did a Story Board to establish when we will use a Match Cut or a Shot/Reverse Shot.

By making the Storyboard before filming, It made us have a layout of how we will film and when we will film and the location of filming.

We hope to create a Storyboard in a similar structure when we start creating our Opening Scene to a Thriller Film.

Preliminary Match Cut Exercise

Bradley is a Police Officer.
Reanne is Filming.
Kavita is The Mother.

Bradley has been informed by the police department that Kavita's son has been murdered. He has been asked as the lead Officer to inform Kavita about her sons death. Kavita gets really upset.

Props being used :
A Gun (Bradley has in his pocket throughout the scene)
Three Plastic Cups (Kavita uses to offer Bradley a drink)
A Cap (Bradley wears throughout the scene)

The Script:
Bradley: My name is Sargent Hession, are you Miss Kavita Kandy? May i come in ?
Kavita: Yes why ? ok.
Bradley: I am here to inform you that sadly your son has been murdered.
Kavita: What ? Noooooooooooooo!
Bradley: I'm Really Sorry.

Title sequence opening edit with sound

To add sound to our opening we had to export our edited clip from final cut, and then drag our clip from the video drive and onto sound track pro. We then had to go through a load of different sounds to find one that suited the opening. Once some sound was chosen we dragged the sound onto the time line   and lengthened or shortened the sound. To add a fade in sound you should double click on the left hand side you click an arrow on the collum the sound is in, the arrow should go down. A purple box will come up, you then should double click the line on that box from the start and end point of when you want the fade to go and adjust it by moving your fade line down.

The picture above is what the choice of sound section looks like it would be in the bottom right of sound track pro.

The picture above shows where the sound should be dragged to. And on the bottom where it says submix1 , at the bottom of that collum you should change the number from 1.6 to 1.2. Only then you should save the finished sound edit to video drive. After you import the opening clip onto final cut where you can check how it looks.

analysis of a film openings

This opening to 'Get Carter' is  narrative opening.

With sound as soon as the opening starts a non diegetic sound of a train as if it is heading to a collision is heard. The sound immediately makes me think that there is going to be a lot of action in this film. The sound of the train could indicate that a major scene in this movie is going to be shot on a train. But the main idea you get from the train sound is that the film is going to have a lot of action in it. After, non diegetic music is played for a pretty long time. The music played seems very suspicious and mysterious. The speed of the music is also key as it has a fast tempo to it, it sets the pace to the film meaning that the film is going to be full on and action packed. Both the train sound and music link in well together.

With mise en scene there is hardly any lighting creating again a suspicious atmosphere. Lighting can indicate whether the film is going to be happy or sad but this type of lighting indicates that the film is going to have a bit of both in it as there is a slight bit of natural lighting which is coming from the windows of the train. The dominance of the dark lighting makes the audience think that there is going to be a regular occurrence of bad/sad things in this film. The suit the character is wearing makes him look serious that he means business, but not ordinary business, because of the build of the man it makes it look like personal business. The dark sunglasses and car usually indicate that the person who owns them is a villain but the contrast of the suit drags away the 'he is definitely a villain' look.

There is only one character the camera films throughout the opening. The amount of face time he receives makes everyone clear that he is the main character. A close up on stallone when he is sitting on the train is to give the audience a clear view on who the character is and emphasise the seriousness the character poses. Most close ups re used to show the audience who the character is and then once the audience verify the actor they tend to find figure out what kind of film they are watching, with stallone most movies are action. There is a mid shot after when stallone is tapping on the window, it shows that he is getting frustrated with the long travel and the frustration shows that he just cant wait to get his hands on someone. When stallone gets of the train a low angle and slow motion is used, the low angle is used to show again his seriousness, while the slow motion and pan down, lets the audience get a good look at the character.

A constant edit on either side of the screen like bluryness shows and emphasises what importance stallone is in this movie, it more or less blocks out everything around him. Finally the way the title sequences come on and off the screen cleverly link in with the opening, everything seems serious and the title sequences come of and on the screen like they do on army console games. That seems to indicate that there will be violent scenes coming up in the movie.

Analysis of Student Film Opening

Mise en Scene: The Lighting used is very dull which makes the character come across as quite harsh and dreary. It sets the mysterious tone of the opening scene, as the same lighting is used throughout. The Dull lighting also makes the room feel very cold. The opening scene is Set in a Public Bathroom which indicates to the audience that the character is not in its comfort zone. A Prop that is used is a Significant Butchers Knife which was also used in the Film Physco. This is a form of Intertextuality. Both Actors are wearing Black and White Suits which shows that they may be from a high status or from a high status job as they have to dress Smart. This also relates to Binary Oppositions as the suits are contrast in colour, Black - White which could represent the mixture of the characters personalities (The Characters could both have Dark Sides). The body language of the main character is quite timid as he isn't standing upright, He has a slight hunch back which shows that he thinks that people are watching him. He's constantly looking around which reinforces his guilt. This shows that he has done something that he regrets and is now realising the consequences of his actions.

Editing: Transitions are used from the very beginning of this Student Film Opening as it shows the Credits. The Opening Credits Fades in and out throughout. The Film title fades in and out which emphasises the title and sets the theme for the opening scene, as the dark colours are used during the fade in and out. This indicates to the audience that something bad may of happened. A Match cut is used when the Murderer drops the knife, We then see the close up of the knife on the floor. The close up puts a emphasis on the action that has happened and the weapon that was used. A Flashback is used when the Murderer goes towards the sink and starts washing his hands. As he looks into the mirror it suddenly flashes and shows the action when he has the knife behind the victim. This shows that the character may be feeling guilty about the situation and what has just happened, therefore he is thinking about it and he can't get it out of his head. The sound  of a Man shouting is used when the flashback happens therefore a Sound Bridge is used to link these two scenes together. This makes the audience refer to the victim everytime they hear that sound made throughout the scene.

Camera: The first time that the audience see a character it is in a Extreme Close Up. This only reveals the eyes of the character and creates tension for the audience as they want to see the full character being shown. When the Camera focuses on the Dead Victim it is a High Angle shot which is looking down on him. This emphasises the innocence of the victim and makes the audience feel more of a sense of sympathy towards the character. The camera also uses a High Angle Shot when focused on the Murderer which creates mixed emotions or the audience as it shows this character as quite Vulnerable. It also may make the audience wonder whether the murder was intentional or not. A Medium shot is used when the Murderer grabs the Mop so he could get rid of any remains shown from his act of Murder. The Medium shot allows the audience to see the whole location where its being filmed therefore we gather up the feel of the are where the murder took place. A Pan is used which swivels to the left after the extreme close up is showed of the murderer. The Pan takes the audience from the murderer, to the murderers weapon the to the victim therefore the audience automatically thinks that this character killed him with this specific weapon/knife. The pan allows the audience to gather up there thoughts on the situation and get a wide view of it.

Sound: Non Diegetic sound is used at the beginning of the opening scene when the opening credits are being introduced. The sound used reinforces the Genre of the Film as it's spooky sound therefore the audience get a feel of either Thriller or Horror ?. After the Film Title is shown to the audience A Motif is used that introduces the character. The sound of dripping water is played very low then it increases as it gets closer to the character being shown on screen. There is also a built up shout which increases the same time as the dripping water therefore it explodes with sound once the character is introduced. This indicates the audience that the character must feel like screaming inside and there is a built up of tension being shown by the character. Throughout Non Diegetic sound is used which is orchestral scores. This sets the mood for the audience and reinforces the amount of character emotions. The Sound effect of the dripping Water is played when focused on the 'Dead Man' which conveys the it may be that characters blood that is dripping. This reinforces the action of Murder taken place. Diegetic sound is used when the murderer drops the knife, the knife rattles on the floor. This reinforces the act of violence and what it may of sounded like to kill an individual. Dialogue was used at the end of the scene where the Murderer states what he has done, which revealed more about the character to the audience and created a storyline.

Health and Safety Tutorial

Health and Safety Tutorial

Health and Safety , Yes , this is where common sense comes in but there where other technical aspects that we learned a couple of weeks ago from our media teacher Dan the Man.

He firstly showed us the recording cameras we would be using , the reaction of the class was quite amazing as this recording camera was at such a professional standard and the fact that we had never used such a camera meant that we would have to take extra special care as Dan mentioned about more than 5 times.

The Recording Camera

The camera is a JVC GY-HM100. This is a practical camcorder and also very lightweight which means it could be carryed around easily.
We had to be confident whilst using the camera and just to make sure , Dan made us do the following:

  • Inserting and removing the sim card
  • Inserting and removing the battery
  • Opening and closing the tripod
  • Inserting and removing the camcorder from the tripod
No wonder we exceeded over our lesson time but as mentioned before this is vital , if  you dont know how to use the camcorder than the thriller opening will come to an end before it even started.

Key Points: We were told how to use the camera buttons -

  • On/Off
  • Zoom In/Out
  • Auto focus/Manual focus

Rules that were set:

  • We shouldnt expose the camera to rain or liquids
  • Leave the camera in a safe place
  • Hold the camera accurately
  • Make sure the camera is on the tripod tightly
  • And lastly one that Dan cant stress enough is DO NOT TOUCH THE CAMERA LENS
The Tripod

Now you see the are two kinds of people when using a tripod - theres the kind who are able to master opening a tripod and on the other hand there are people like me who either get there fingers caught while opening the tripod or just play clumpsy.

So Opening a tripod , you simply just extend the first bottom legs and then extend it even further, then open the tripod up.Its extremely useful using a tripod as it reaches a high level , reduced shaking and gets good angels.

That concludes our health and safety tutorial : some technical aspects and a whole heap of common sense!!!

Health and Safety Tutorial

In a lesson several weeks ago with Dan we first held the equipment that we would be using to create our thriller film. We did our first shots with the Video Camera we were assinged to just to get used to the equipment. But before we did anything further we had learn about how to work the Video Camera and how to insert the memory card, as one would be stored with images, whilst the other would have videos on of our work. We learnt all this from a video provided by candi media. We also learned how to use the camera and what Memory card to insert in the Camera. We also learnt about Health and Safety and The Dos and Don'ts of what to do with the Cameras for example, Don't Run with the Camera, Do Video Record as much as you can within the time given etc. I felt that we learnt a lot in that lesson about the equipment which has helped us with other lessons.

INTEXTUALITY - THE STEPFATHER

INTEXTUALITY - THE STEPFATHER
  • The white tiles
  • The shape of the knife
  • The same style of staircase
  • Drowning of a character in water
  • The hand on the shoulder
  • Sliding down the white bath tiles after being stabbed
  • The pulling of the curtains
  • The white curtains
A popular scene of 'The Stepfather' is the bathroom scene as some aspects are borrowed from the thriller      ' Psycho'.

Theorys

THE HITCHCOCKS BOMB THEORY-  When  the audience is aware of the danger , just like a bomb under the table but the characters in the film are unaware of it.For example in the Stepfather the bomb was the man is the bomb as he is a killer , the audience have knowledge about what kind of man he is , in this case he is dangerous and a threat to the new family he has joined  but they believe his innocent.

Playing happy familys

All is revealed at the end

THE FALSE PLATEAU-  This is where suspense is built up but then the audience is made to feel relax and calm. Then the shock happens afterwards. For instant the womenin the bath in fatal attraction coming back to life.

Another example is in 'The Stepfather' a false plateau occurs when the cat jumps out , this made the audience feel frightened and was a attack of  suprise but then the tension died down , then suddenly the killer appears from no where , this made the viewers feel even more frightened at this point.

Film Audiences

Film Audiences

Target Audience - A group of people that share a relationship with a film

  • The audience plays an important role in movie genres. The taste of specific segment of audience makes the movies on particular genres popular.
  • Audiences watch a films in order to gain certain gratifications. For example the people watch horror films in order to be scared, while watching the text the audiences bring their knowledge of previous films and expect to see particular conventions which help them to identify genre of the film.
  • Stuart Hall Reception Theory - states that the audience will have one of these responses to the text- 1.Prefered response ,   2.Negotiated response ,  3.Oppositional response
  • Genre and Ideology - Genres reinforce dominant ideology for instant a film with a action genre tend to promote ideas such as masculinity, danger and power.
  • Audiences will attend films of particular genres.Only an audience with a particular ideology will go and see a film with a certain genre that fulfils their needs and caters to their tatste. For example you would not expect a masculine man to go and see a chick- flick willingly unless ..... as films of this genre may not be targeted at him but rather to a female audience instead.

CARGEL - Class , Age, Race , Gender, Ethnicity , Level

'CARGEL' is used in the film industry to create a target audience for film.
It allows a film or piece of media to be targeted to a certain audience such as an age group or a certain ethnicity from its context.

For example the Avengers Assemble , from the film poster we can define what the target audience is but of course anybody is welcome to see the film !

Analysis of Student Film Opening

Mise en Scene: The lighting used is natural light when focused on the girl which makes the character come across as innocent and makes the audience feel sympathy. The setting shifts from the local Street to the inside of a room. This shows that the location that this scene is set in is London as we see the iconic London Taxi once focused on the street. The colour of the walls inside the room are red which connotes blood and danger and so are the prop used which is the Red Lipstick also emphasises this. The tablets and the glass of water also makes the audience believe that something is wrong with the character being shown as the character is trying to get rid of any pain she feels by taking the tablets. The clothes that she is wearing reflects her age as a youth because its fashionable amongst young people. When the girl pulls up her top a pink teddy bear is also in the background which relates to her age as a youth and also reflects her gender. The body language is very stern which shows confidence. Her facial expression is always in a smirk throughout the scene which shows that she is proud of what she has done, connotes happiness. When the hand is shown, the Prop used is a Mobile Phone which shows that this character has tried to contact someone but has failed therefore it links to the storyline and informs the audience of what has happened. The scarf that is used as another prop is thrown on the floor by the end of the scene which shows that it doesn't belong to the character as she treats it without respect.

Sound: At the beginning of the opening scene Diegetic Sound is used when the people on bicycles ride past as the audience can hear the sound of the wheels. This shows that it is a normal day and people are doing routine actions therefore the audience are expecting the next scene to be related to routine actions such as, Waking up, Brushing Teeth, Eating Breakfast etc. Non Diegetic sound is introduced in the next scene as it sounds like rain hitting the ground then vibrating for a while. This is repeated throughout and connotes sadness as rain relates to Tears. Tension is also built by this Non Diegetic sound as it allows the audience to infer what will happen next. This could also reflect how a character within this scene is feeling. Diegetic sound is used again when the character puts on her heels and starts walking we can hear the 'Clip Clop' sound. This is sound on set and helps build up tension for the audience as its slow steps and isn't used much within the scene therefore its something different. Non Diegetic sound is used (which sounds like a scape of a violin) when focused on the arm holding the mobile phone. This is an unusual sound and is a sound that is used mainly in Thrillers therefore the audience initially know the genre of the film. The sound also creates a frightened feel to the scene as its a quick sound and doesn't reveal much, but as an audience we can tell that something isn't right.

Camera: In the opening scene a Pan is used where the camera is on a fixed point and it swivels to the right. The Pan is used when the Camera is focused on the Street before it enters the room. This makes the audience see the whole setting and allows the audience to gather their thoughts and feelings towards the opening scene. The camera then moves up slowly to where it zooms in to the outside of the Apparent Room. This makes the audience focus on the outside and whether or not it is the real outside of the room where it is filmed, the audience automatically think it is. A Close Up is used once the camera takes us into the room. This first items we see in the Close Up is a tablet and a Glass of water. By using the Close Up it emphases these items to the audience and allows the audience to question Why are they there ? What has happened ? This draws the audience into the opening scene. Another Close Up is used once the Camera focuses on the girl, this only allows us to see half of her face therefore as an audience member the character isn't fully revealed to us yet. A Slight High Angle shot is used when the girl is applying her Red Lipstick. This creates an innocent tone towards the girl as she comes across as very carm and natural. Another close up is used when the girl pulls up her top, This relates to her age as we see the teddy bear in the background as the close up emphases it. We also see a close up of her shoes as she puts them on and gets off the bed to walk which shows that where she is must be familiar as she's comfortable enough to take off her shoes. The close up allows the audience to infer that this room must be hers not anyone Else's. This is contradicted when the Big Close up of a arm is focused on by the Camera. By using a Big Close up allows the audience to see enough but not everything therefore the audience are wondering, Who is that ? What happened ?

Editing: Match Cuts are used in the Room scene when the girl picks up items such as the glass of Water that she drinks out of. This emphasises the action that she does and also shows the audience everything that she is doing at that place in time. Transitions are used throughout the scene where the scenes fade in and out. This suggests that the actions of the character in the scene is closely linked. This also makes the audience understand the text better as it gives the audience mini breaks which allows the audience to take in everything that has happened and evaluate. Slow motion is used when the girl turns around to look at the bed. This makes that action seem significant to the audience as it helps the audience take in the dramatic action and the fact that we don't see where she is looking at straight away also helps build tension in that scene. Editing for Perspective is used throughout the scene as the scene appears to be from the girls perspective throughout and doesn't give us any other perspective.
