Film Audiences
Target Audience - A group of people that share a relationship with a film
- The audience plays an important role in movie genres. The taste of specific segment of audience makes the movies on particular genres popular.
- Audiences watch a films in order to gain certain gratifications. For example the people watch horror films in order to be scared, while watching the text the audiences bring their knowledge of previous films and expect to see particular conventions which help them to identify genre of the film.
- Stuart Hall Reception Theory - states that the audience will have one of these responses to the text- 1.Prefered response , 2.Negotiated response , 3.Oppositional response
- Genre and Ideology - Genres reinforce dominant ideology for instant a film with a action genre tend to promote ideas such as masculinity, danger and power.
- Audiences will attend films of particular genres.Only an audience with a particular ideology will go and see a film with a certain genre that fulfils their needs and caters to their tatste. For example you would not expect a masculine man to go and see a chick- flick willingly unless ..... as films of this genre may not be targeted at him but rather to a female audience instead.
CARGEL - Class , Age, Race , Gender, Ethnicity , Level
'CARGEL' is used in the film industry to create a target audience for film.
It allows a film or piece of media to be targeted to a certain audience such as an age group or a certain ethnicity from its context.
For example the Avengers Assemble , from the film poster we can define what the target audience is but of course anybody is welcome to see the film !
